Oblong folio, original blind-paneled brown morocco gilt, central panel gilt-blocked with title, covers with small white ceramic corner bosses, spine blind-tooled in six compartments, all edges gilt, decorative pattern endpages and pastdowns. Buckram folding protective case. Scattered foxing, affecting the group shot of Sherman and his officers (plate 1); some eight others with noticeable foxing, a light dampstain to lower margin, BUT A VERY GOOD COPY OF THIS RARE COLLECTION. Narrative account by Barnard of the scenes and battles covered by his work, probably intended to serve as a promotion. VERY RARE. A complete copy of Barnard's photographic record of the devastating impact of Sherman's campaigns--bold offensive movements that fatally weakened the Confederacy. "Sherman demonstrated a military talent that has led some historians to rank him as the top Federal commander of the war" (Boatner). In 1863 Barnard was appointed Official Photographer of the Military Division of the Mississippi and accompanied Sherman's army on its dramatic campaigns including Chattanooga, Tennessee, battles at Resaca, the siege and capture of Atlanta, the March to the Sea and the final thrust into the Carolinas. In his images Barnard concentrated on the post-battle landscapes and city scenes, capturing the desolation in the wake of battle in telling detail and physicality; the tonalities of the prints are rich and full of contrast.
