Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1989
1 dozen bottles per lot
CHÂTEAU HAUT-BRION WINEMAKER'S NOTES Jean Delmas' notes on the 1989 vintage at Haut Brion: "Start of the harvest took place on August 29th with the picking of the white grapes. It continued with the picking of the red grapes on Thursday 31st of August and continued over the first week in September. The 1893 vintage was the only other time grapes could be picked starting in August. In 1893 the harvest started on August 15. The particular soils of Haut Brion of both sand and gravels combined with hot and dry weather conditions during the spring and summer allowed the production of such a wine. Ideal climatic conditions all year permitted early ripening of the grapes. The hot and dry weather conditions during the growing season resulted in very healthy, fully matured grapes with very thick skins, still not very juicy grapes but with big seeds and a high sugar level. On August 31st the must was above 13 degrees natural alcohol. The high alcohol and low acidities at the end of August were due to the outstanding maturity of the grapes. At Haut Brion over 60 of the acreage was pruned in July or harvested "green" (one bunch out of two) thus enabling the grapes to arrive at a level of maturity never reached before." Property of a Gentleman Recently removed by Christie's from a temperature and humidity controlled, professionally maintained storage facility. Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1989 Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé In original wooden case Jean Delmas writes about the 1989 Haut-Brion: "Today one can say about this wine: first the wine shows great concentration of aromas and a lot of mellowness due to lovely tannins and a rather low acidity. A wine with a lot of finesse and harmony. One might compare it to the 1959 for its structure and mellowness. Similar weather conditions that produced a rather similar crop. The Haut-Brion 1989 is one of the Haut-Brions, if not the best, of the last 50 years. Production was 15,000 cases; drink 2000-2025." Expressive. A massive volume of aromatic complexity. Deliciously seductive texture. Grip, power, extract, complex fruit, it's all there. Superb! As the wine opens up, a classy cigar note, cedar like aromas, wonderfully ripe and youthful fruits, back to tobacco! and cedar, this wine unfolds a medley of complexity. Flavors are extracted and focused. An amazing wine! Several tasting notes, similar experiences. March 5, 2003 ST 1 dozen bottles per lot
