Title, dedication, 8pp, description of the plates. 43 engraved plates (3 double-page) by J.Basire, C.Grignon and others after Chambers, Thomas Sandby and others. (Light offsetting to double-page plates, occasional light browning.) Contemporary calf gilt, arms of the Marquess of Bute on covers, spine with red morocco lettering-piece (extremities worn, joints split). Provenance : 1st Marquess of Bute (binding). FIRST EDITION, AND AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY. Chambers's work at Kew between 1757 and 1762 was the cornerstone on which his professional reputation was built, "through Lord Bute... [Chambers] was introduced to Augusta, princess dowager of Wales, who was seeking a young architect to adorn the gardens of her 'villa' or palace, at Kew." (DNB).
