MANUSCRIPTS - SARPI & SCHARP - ORMEL, Hermanus. Familie-Aanteekeningen van verscheidene eeuwen betreffende het geslacht Scharp. En andere daar mede van tijd tot tijd verzwaagerde Familien. Tot zijn eigen genoegen en tot nut zijner Afstammelingen verzaameld en in orde gebragt [...], 1802. Folio. Dark green full morocco binding with dark red morocco inlaid decorative borders, gilt decorated boards and dark red morocco gilt letterpiece on spine, with floral roll tools along the edges of the covers, gilt inside dentelles. All edges gilt, with blind stamped decorations. Endpapers marbled. In fitting skai covered cardboard box, inside covered with red velvet. With autograph genealogical tree from 1802 till 1390, calligraphed by Hermanus Ormel and commissioned by S.S. Theol. Doctor Jan Scharp in 1802. Calligraphed pages interspersed with decorations of full page watercolours of coats of arms and tipped-in watercolours with family portraits, title and intertitles with soft pink, yellow and green floral decorations and an entirely hand-painted frontispiece. Box sl. soiled, binding and spine ends sl. chafed, corners sl. bumped, but overall in good condition, internally exceptionally fine. XXVI, 154 pp. and 26 unnumbered full pp. with numerous watercolours, some in relief, some gummed-up. Captivating 19th century illuminated manuscript. Artist or Maker: SARPI & SCHARP - ORMEL, Hermanus. Provenance: Private collection; collection of Jeanne Scharp (and her husband, conferencier Alex de Haas) Notes: In 1802 Jan Scharp, a Dutch Church minister, commissioned a book on his family destined for his future heirs because he reached the age of 50 (!). The most prominent member of this family was Bishop Paolo Sarpi Veneto (1552 - 1623), famous for his History of the Council of Trent (1619), published in London, and known as a defender of the (liberties) of the Republic of Venice and as a scientist. Friend of Galileï, he exchanged letters with such contemporaries as Francis Bacon and William Harvey He entered the Servite Order at the age of 13, which didn't keep him from rising against the pope when the latter tried to restrict the worldly rights of Venetians.
