Beschreibung:

Order: Orthoptera, Family: Gryllidae Order: Hymenoptera, Family: Bethylidae Oligocene La Toca Mines, Dominican Republic Insects in amber are considered rare, making the recent discovery of a cricket predating upon a fly in amber an exceedingly rare find. The finely polished cabochon, with crystal clear interior tinged with green, displays the unfortunate victim, a fly, trapped within the mouth parts of the very large cricket. The cricket itself is preserved in an exceptional state: color banding can be seen on all legs and on its back; fine hairs and spikes are exhibited on its legs and body; beautifully perfect compound eyes and long (1/2”), excellently preserved, segmented antennae are seen. Eggs are seen trailing out of the abdomen. Also present is an equally large and perfect Bethylid Wasp and some small flies. Considered by the mining collectives of the Dominican Republic to be a first of its kind, this specimen perfectly encapsulates a dramatic 30 million-year-old moment. Cabachon measures 2 x 1 ¼ x ¼in
