Order: Orthoptera, Family: Gryllidae Order: Hymenoptera, Family: Bethylidae Oligocene La Toca Mines, Dominican Republic Insects in amber are considered rare, making the recent discovery of a cricket predating upon a fly in amber an exceedingly rare find. The finely polished cabochon, with crystal clear interior tinged with green, displays the unfortunate victim, a fly, trapped within the mouth parts of the very large cricket. The cricket itself is preserved in an exceptional state: color banding can be seen on all legs and on its back; fine hairs and spikes are exhibited on its legs and body; beautifully perfect compound eyes and long (1/2”), excellently preserved, segmented antennae are seen. Eggs are seen trailing out of the abdomen. Also present is an equally large and perfect Bethylid Wasp and some small flies.
