TAUSIG, CARL Autograph manuscript signed of "Liebesscene--Verklärung", No.1 of the Drei Paraphrasen über Tristan und Isolde von Richard Wagner für das Klavier, [c.1865-1868] the Stichvorlage, notated for piano on up to twelve staves per page, in brown ink, including Wagner's text for the love duet in Act 2 ("O sink hernieder Nacht der Liebe..."), a working manuscript with a revised passage written on six-stave paper laid onto page 3, another leaf cut down (pp.5/6), the score marked up throughout for the printer in blue crayon, orange crayon and pencil, including the plate number "S.5453. (I)" on the first page, signed on the autograph title listing all three pieces 14 pages, folio (c.34.5 x 27cm) including autograph title (on 22-stave paper), the music paginated 1-13 by the composer, second half of the 1860s Carl Tausig was born in Warsaw in 1841 and shone brightly as a star piano virtuoso, before dying of typhoid fever in 1871, when still only 29. Tausig was the most gifted of Liszt's early pupils, who became an ardent follower of Wagner. The heart of Tausig's paraphrase is the celebrated love scene in Act 2 of Tristan und Isolde, including Brangäne's song from the watchtower, warning the doomed lovers of the impending dawn. Tausig interprets Wagner's orchestral textures for piano, extending bars here and there, sometimes omitting the voice parts altogether. His paraphrase also features the Prelude and "Liebestod". Tausig composed relatively few works and autograph sources for them are rare: none is recorded at auction and few in libraries. He also made some important transcriptions of Wagner, including for the complete vocal score of Die Meistersinger (1868). The plate number S.5453 and the casting-off marks indicate that this manuscript was used by the engraver of the first edition, published by the Schlesinger'sche Buch & Musikhandlung of Berlin between about 1865 and 1868. The editor's extensive deletions and annotations to Tausig's title page contain instructions to the printer: "Noch eleganter Stich möglichst 6 Systeme schöner Kopf mit Verzierungen. Note wie Heller La Chasse mit Page 5 anfangen...Bis 24 Februar fertig"). KVK records only one copy of the first edition (in the Württembergische Landesbibliothek, Stuttgart) and we have not traced it in the Berlin State Library (StaBiKat) or the German National Library.
