BURGOYNE, Sir John Fox]. Illuminated calligraphic manuscript, a grant of arms under authority of Queen Victoria to Sir John Fox Burgoyne, signed by Sir Charles George Young, Knight of the Garter and James Pulman Clarenceaux, 25 March 1856. 26½ x 20 in. , ON THICK PARCHMENT, with large coat of arms and three smaller in upper portion, finely illuminated in colors and gold, text in italic and roman scripts, two original wax seals in circular brass skippets pendant on blue silk ribbons, rolled and housed in a specially made box covered in black morocco and decorated with gilt coronets and linked initials "VR" (Victoria Regina) . Sir John Fox Burgoyne (1782-1871) was the eldest of four illegitimate children of Lt. General John Burgoyne, who was defeated at Saratoga during the American Revolution. His son became a very distinguished military engineer, serving with distinction in the Napoleonic Wars and later in the Crimea (see DNB).
