BOSWELL, James. Autograph letter signed ("James Boswell"), to Andrew Gibb, London, 6 August 1792. 1 page, folio, integral address leaf in Boswell's hand. Docketed (presumably by Gibb) "From the Laird," slight matburn, tape remnants along edge of address leaf .

BOSWELL ISSUES INSTRUCTIONS TO THE OVERSEER OF HIS SCOTTISH ESTATE while he remains in London, trying (unsuccessfully) to establish a successful English law practice while also basking in the critical acclaim of his Life of Johnson published the year before. "This will be delivered to you by my eldest son, who is to be my representative this year, as I am to be in Devonshire and Cornwall. You will pay all attention to him, and let him have what money he asks for. On receipt of this you will pay on my account five guineas to old William Stothart the Smith, being a present from his worthy son Thomas who is in a very prosperous way..." Andrew Gibb took over as overseer of Boswell's estate, Auchinleck, in Scotland after the death of the previous overseer, James Bruce who died in August of 1790.
