BINDING. -- Bible, in English. The Holy Bible [with: The Book of Common Prayer. 1670; The Whole Book of Psalms . 1673]. Cambridge: John Hayes 1670. 3 works in one volume, 4° (235 x 170mm). Rubricated throughout. The Bible extra-illustrated with numerous small format plates (approx. 90 x 150mm.), each with explanatory text in Latin, German and French on verso. BOUND BY QUEENS' BINDER A (WILLIAM NOTT?) IN RED GOATSKIN GILT, the covers panelled with roll-tools, and with an overall pattern of drawer handles, pointillé volutes and fleurons, the drawer handles and some other tools highlighted with black paint, some volutes and fleurons highlighted with silver paint (now oxidised), the spine similarly decorated in the seven compartments with raised bands, edges gilt and with elaborate gauffered floral decoration, the foredge with a small painted oval with the title gauffered in gilt (upper joint slightly split, spine with small split at head and chipped at foot, corners a little bumped). Provenance : John Howell (inscription, gift to); Captain Edward Buller (inscription dated Oct. 19 1799, later armorial bookplate "Sir Edward Buller"). A FINE EXAMPLE FROM THE GREATEST PERIOD OF ENGLISH BOOKBINDING. G. D. Hobson originally listed 28 bindings which he attributed to Queens' binder (so-named because he bound books for both Catherine of Braganza and Mary of Modena). More recent examination of this group of Restoration bindings has identified four separate binders (Queens' binders A-D). H. M. Nixon has suggested that (based on a diary entry by Pepys) Binder A is quite probably William Nott. Cf. Herbert 712 (Eph. ii. 13 sometimes not sometime ).
