Provenance : Johannes Morser, Santein 1717 (inscription in each volume) -- André Himpe ( De Gulden Passer 2003, nos. 28 and 29). A composite set, uniformly bound and brought together by the early 18th century at the latest, when they were owned by Johannes Morser. Koberger's 1485 edition (vol. IV of this set) was THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED LATIN BIBLE. The fine woodcut illustrations belong properly to the accompanying Postilla of Nicolaus of Lyra, a text with an illustrated tradition in manuscript. This tradition did not immediately translate into print, since the printers of many early editions provided only blank spaces for the illustrations. Koberger had printed illustrations for his separate edition of the Postilla in 1481 and adapted them for this 1485 Bible edition. Those 1485 cuts appear again in the present 1497 edition. In turn, they strongly influenced the woodcuts in the first illustrated Bible in Italy. I-III: HC *3171; GW 4294; BMC II 443 (IB.7535); BSB-Ink B-477; Schreiber 3476; Goff B-619. IV: HC *3166; GW 4288; BMC II 427 (IB.7323); BSB-Ink B-453; Schreiber 3472; Goff B-613. (4)
