Autograph letter signed ("John Franklin"), to General Sir Peregrine Maitland, Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, written from his winter quarters at Fort Franklin on Great Bear Lake, giving an account of his expedition so far, the letter opening: "Your Excellency having requested me to furnish you with an account of the progress of the Expedition, I avail myself with pleasure of the opportunity that now offers of a conveyance to Canada - to write to you", and describing the itinerary and encounters with "the Esquimaux" from the time of their crossing of Lakes Huron and Superior up until their arrival at Great Bear Lake and the construction of Fort Franklin, with an account of the party sent by him under Dr Richardson to explore the North American coast to the eastward ("...By this visit the way was cleared for the commencement of our operations next spring - as we had ascertained the direction of the Coast East & West from the Mouth of the river, and had taken measures for facilitating an interview with the Esquimaux - who at the time were engaged farther to the Eastward, catching Seals & Whales - We found the Sea entirely free from ice, and without any apparent obstruction to the passage of the ships under Capt Parry..."), 4 pages, Britannia watermark, Whatman, 1824, very light dust-staining, 4to, "Fort Franklin Great Bear Lake/ Lat 65 12', Long 123 5'/ November 5th 1825"
