Ulrich Zel, Cologne's first printer, learned his craft from Fust and Schoeffer in Mainz. He began printing in Cologne probably in 1465, produced his first dated book in 1466 (Johannes Chrysostomus, Super psalmo L ; Goff J-297), and continued active until the end of the fifteenth century. His production consisted predominantly of theological works in Latin, although he printed some classical and humanistic texts and a few books in German. The reputation and importance of St. Augustine of Hippo, the great Father of the Latin Church, attracted the attribution of many works which he did not write. In this volume, the treatise on drunkenness consists of extracts from a sermon of St. Caesarius of Arles. This selection of texts was reprinted twice in Cologne, by Zel ca. 1468-69, and again ca. 1474 by the printer of the Legenda S. Albani. BMC describes this edition as printed in type 96 recast on a body measuring 99, with a round h and T, and four pinholes; the h was replaced with a tailed h between 1467 and 1469. According to a pencilled note by Albert Ehrman on the pastedown of the present copy, it was formerly bound with a copy of Pseudo-Augustinus, De vita christiana (Goff A-1355), which was signed by Zel and dated 1467 (see The Nakles Collection of Incunabula, Christie's New York, 17 April 2000, lot 26).
