Beschreibung:

Augurelli, Giovanni Aurelio and Jacopo Sannazaro. I. Aurelius Augurellus. (Venice: Aldo Manuzio, April 1505)
Iacobi Sannazarii opera omnia Latine scripta, nuper edita. (Venice: in the house of the heirs of Aldo Manuzio & Andrea Torresano, September 1535)
The first Aldine edition of the verses of Augurelli (1441-1524), poet and alchemist. Most of the poems in this collection are addressed to friends or notable public figures, including Aldo himself; some had previously appeared in the 1491 Verona edition of Augurelli's verse.
A fine binding made for Jacques de Malenfant of Toulouse, probably by Claude de Piques. He studied in Paris from 1545 onwards, and around thirty books are recorded with his ownership, some of which feature this armorial with its motto in Greek (Mirjam Foot, The Henry Davis Gift, vol. I, pp.156-169, "Jacques de Malenfant's Binder", with a census of his bindings, mentioning a copy of the 1535 Sannazaro on p.160).
2 works in one volume, 8vo (157 x 93 mm). Italic type, 28+30 lines plus headline; collation: Augurelli: a-q8: 128 leaves (a2 and q7 blank); Sannazaro: a-e8 A-H8: 104 leaves. Woodcut Aldine device on final verso (otherwise blank) of first work, and on title-page and final verso of second work.
binding: Parisian brown calf (163 x 100 mm), ca. 1567, with an azured gilt centerpiece containing the arms of Jacques de Malenfant [Olivier 1000], single gilt fillet outer border, spine with gilt fillets framing each band and a small flower stamp in compartments, plain edges. (Joints repaired, binding slightly rubbed.)
provenance: Jacques de Malenfant, seigneur de Preissac (ca. 1530-ca. 1603), arms on binding. acquisition: Purchased from Libreria Pregliasco, Turin, 2000. references: UCLA 89 & 279; Aldo Manuzio tipografo 91; Cataldi Palau 142; Edit16 3381 & 27239; Renouard 49/2 & 114/3
