Oil on canvas, 91.3 x 71.3 cm N.B. I: The Dutch painter Willem Cornelisz. Duyster was born in Amsterdam in 1599. He painted genre works such as resting soldiers playing cards, smoking and drinking and fighting over the spoils, but he also painted many portraits. He was very skilled at rendering clothing and textiles. Willem Duyster was baptised on 30 August 1599 in the Oude Kerk church in Amsterdam. He was the oldest of four children from the second marriage of his father Cornelis Dircksz. with the Norwegian Hendrikje Jeronimus. In 1620 the family moved from the Paternoststeeg to the Koningsstraat, to a house with the name 'De Duystere Werelt'. From this name Willem derived his surname. This name is first listed in a document dating from 1625 describing a fierce dispute between Duyster and his former friend and tutor Pieter Codde (Amsterdam 1599 - 1678). In 1631 he married Margrieta Kick, a sister of the painter Simon Kick The publication of his banns was on the same day that Simon Kick banns were announced to Willems sister Stijntje. Willem Duyster died in 1635 of the plague and was buried in the Zuiderkerk church in Amsterdam. N.B. II: We are grateful to Prof. dr. Rudi Ekkart for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
