Thirty-nine autograph letters signed (a few with initials) from Dante Gabriel Rossetti Sir Edward Burne-Jones Sir Frederick Leighton, Albert Moore, and James McNeill Whistler to the artists' models Miss Augusta Jones (?later addressed as Mrs. Hart) and her sister Miss Milly Jones, virtually all arranging for sittings, written from London, n.d. [some envelopes postmarked from 1866-1872]. Together 48 pages, 12mo-8vo, with 16 envelopes, bound in 2 vols., large 8vo, maroon crushed levant morocco, covers with single gilt fillet around a triple ruled and gilt dotted inner border with stylized leaf corner ornaments, upper covers with single gilt fillet around a triple ruled and gilt dotted inner border with stylized leaf corner ornaments, upper covers gilt lettered with a description of the letters; spines in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt lettered in three compartments, gilt panelled in the rest; board edges and turn-ins gilt, gilt edges, calligraphic title-pages, stamp-signed on lower turn-ins: "Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe London" and with their gilt cypher, spines a trifle darkened. Comprises: 7 letters from Dante Gabriel Rossetti to Augusta Jones, 12 letters from Sir Edward Burne-Jones to Augusta Jones (3 apparently addressed to her as Mrs. Hart), 15 letters from Sir Frederick Leighton to Milly Jones, 2 letters from Albert Moore to Milly Jones, and 3 letters from James McNeill Whistler to Milly Jones. Rossetti to Augusta Jones, "Wednesday," n.d.: "I hear you are free next week any day but Wednesday, so I'll engage you Thursday & Saturday of that week, at 12 each day, if you can come. Mind, I shall look on them as full days, so dont go sitting first somewher else & getting tired." Burne-Jones to Augusta Jones, n.d.; "I must ask you to postpone coming after all -- it must seem too absurd to you, but I think I have got into this state through overwork & I will begin drawing from you again in a fortnight -- I must take a complete rest at present or else I shall have to join the asylum next door." Burne-Jones to Mrs. Hart [July 1872]: "...can you come to my help again. I want to finish a head I began from you 4 years ago and as soon as I can do it the better..." Whistler to Milly Jones, n.d.: "Forgive my sending this so late at night -- but I am unable to work from you tomorrow and would like to put off our sittings until the Sunday and Monday fortnight...This notice comes upon you suddenly and of course I am responsible for your time tomorrow and the day after."
