APULEIUS MADAURENSIS, Lucius (b. ca.123). Lamour de Cupido et de Psiché . Translated by C. Chappuys, A. Héroet, and M. de Saint-Gelais. [Paris, 1590?].
APULEIUS MADAURENSIS, Lucius (b. ca.123). Lamour de Cupido et de Psiché . Translated by C. Chappuys, A. Héroet, and M. de Saint-Gelais. [Paris, 1590?]. Small 2 o (253 x 177 mm). Engraved title and 32 numbered engraved plates by Léonard Gaultier (some marginal staining, plates 25 and 26 reversed). Modern black morocco gilt, with semis of alternating crowned Ls and sun tools for Lothian, edges gilt, by Orrock & Son. Provenance : Schomburg Henry Kerr, 9th Marquis of Lothian (1833-1900), British diplomat and bibliophile (binding and bookplate; his sale, Sotheby's January 1932, lot 86); acquired from Ximenes, 1971. Second issue, with the last plate replaced by one omitting the date and Gaultier's name (the first has this plate dated 1586 and signed). One of the most delicately illustrated French books of the late 16th century executed by the great French master-engraver Léonard Gaultier (1561-1641). "Gaultier's scenes are primarily reversed, enlarged copies of the fine woodcut Psyche series used by Jeanne de Marnef Janot in a 1546 volume including the same French text. In several cases, only part of the scene--either figures or background--is reversed. Gaultier has provided additional background details... It seems probable that Gaultier did not go beyond the Janot blocks when preparing his plates, but it is interesting to note here the return to the Italian idea of a set of plates with engraved text" (Mortimer). The title is signed with Gaultier's name and monogram, the plates are signed with his monogram. WIDE-MARGINED COPY, Mortimer notes that most copies have been trimmed to a small size and mistaken for an octavo, this copy taller than the Harvard copy. Brunet I:367-68; Mortimer French 34 (dated issue).
