[Apollo 9] David Scott in the open hatch of the spacecraft orbiting the Earth orbit during the first US two-man EVA. Russell Schweickart, 3–13 March 1969. Printed 1969. Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based Kodak paper [NASA image AS9–20-3064]. 25.4×20.3 cm (10×8 in), with “A Kodak Paper” watermarks on the verso (NASA / North American Rockwell, Downey, California). Literature: LIFE, 28 March 1969, ppg. 26–27 (variant); Time, 28 March 1969, pg. 54; Space: A History of Space Exploration in Photographs, Chaikin, pg. 84; Spacecam: Photographing the Final Frontier from Apollo to Hubble, Hope, pg. 40; Moon: Man’s Greatest Adventure, Thomas, ed., ppg. 160–161; Apollo: The Epic Journey to the Moon, Reynolds, pg. 43. This fantastic photograph from the first EVA of the Apollo program features a simultaneous EVA by Russell Schweickart who took the photograph as he was spacewalking over the blue Earth outside of the LM Spider and by David Scott who was performing a stand-up EVA in the open hatch of the CSM Gumdrop and also taking photographs with his Hasselblad. It is also one of the only photographs showing the docked LM/CSM spacecraft in space. The first two-man EVA was performed two months earlier by cosmonauts Khrunov and Yeliseyev, who conducted a spacecraft transfer from Soyuz 5 to Soyuz 4 in January 1969. “I took this shot of Dave Scott taking a picture of me at the beginning of my EVA on Apollo 9. It captures just a bit of the fantastic beauty of the Earth juxtaposed against the infinite black of space. In the foreground is that amazing combination of human and machine that is enabling us to emerge into the universe out of the womb of Earth.” Russell Schweickart (Jacobs, p. 42).
