After Bartolomeo Schedoni CUPID oil on canvas, unframed A later copy after Schedoni's ' Cupid ' that exists in two autograph versions: the first is in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples (inv. Q 385) 1 , datable to ' circa ' 1610–12; the second is in The Hermitage, Saint Petersburg (inv. no. ГЭ-1559). 2 According to some, Schedoni was a pupil of the Carracci brothers. He certainly worked for the ducal palace of Modena between 1602 and 1606, then entered the service of Duke Ranuccio of Parma from 1607 to 1615 as first painter to the court, where he was highly favoured. Careful examination of his works shows that he studied the paintings of Correggio and that he had an even greater affinity with Caravaggio. Schedoni is known to have been a keen gambler, and he died relatively young, having incurred a significant gambling debt in a single night that he was unable to pay. 1 http://catalogo.fondazionezeri.unibo.it/scheda.v2.jsp? locale=en&decorator=layout_resp&apply=true&tipo_scheda=OA&id=59074&titolo=Sche doni+Bartolomeo%2C+Cupido 2 https://www.hermitagemuseum.org/wps/portal/hermitage/digital- collection/01.+Paintings/29800/ Unframed: 79.2 x 61.6 cm.; 31 1/4 x 24 1/4 in.
