A VICTORIAN SMALL BRASS TRAVELLING ALARM TIMEPIECE WITH OCTAGONAL MAHOGANY OUTER GUARD BOX UNSIGNED, THIRD QUARTER OF THE 19th CENTURY The circular four ringed columnar pillar movement with twin spring barrels and lever escapement set between the spotted plates regulated by sprung three-arm balance oscillating within an aperture to the movement backplate concealed beneath a second falseplate, the alarm powered by the second spring barrel and sounding via a screw-adjustable hammer on the inside of the brass cylindrical case, the rear falseplate with Slow/Fast regulation lever, knurled alarm and hand-setting screws, and integral winding keys, the 2 inch circular frosted gilt brass Roman numeral dial with rotating alarm disc painted with a pointer to centre and blued steel spade hands, the cylindrical brass case with very thick circular dial glass and push-fit concentric ring decorated rear cover; with original mahogany octagonal outer guard box incorporating moulded dial aperture to the hinged lid and with red velvet lining to interior. The timepiece 6cm (3.375ins) diameter, 4cm (1.5ins) deep; the outer box 8.3cm (3.25ins) wide, 4.5cm (1.75ins) deep. The outer mahogany box to the present lot is reminiscent of those containing marine chronometers made during the late 18th/ early 19th century by such makers as John Arnold Pendleton and Brockbanks. The movement is also well made with the quality and finish reminiscent of movements made for fine quality Victorian strut clocks by the likes of Thomas Cole Overall, the present timepiece has the feel of being supplied to a regular traveller, perhaps a coachman, coastal or inland mariner, or even an early railwayman.
