ATTRIBUTED TO ALEXANDRE-JEAN OPPENORDT PROBABLY AFTER A DESIGN BY JEAN BERAIN, CIRCA 1690
A ROYAL LOUIS XIV ORMOLU-MOUNTED, ENGRAVED BRASS AND POLYCHROME HORN-INLAID TORTOISESHELL CASKET ATTRIBUTED TO ALEXANDRE-JEAN OPPENORDT PROBABLY AFTER A DESIGN BY JEAN BERAIN, CIRCA 1690 Of rectangular shape, inlaid to all sides, the slightly domed lid centred by the crowned arms of the Dauphin of France within a strap-work cartouche decorated with laurel branches and dolphins, flanked by fleur-de-lys , the angles with further crowned cartouches with interlaced Ls, enclosing a plain interior, the frieze edged with brass bands and decorated with the dolphin-wrapped cypher 'L' and centred to front and back with the crowned arms of the Dauphin of France, the sides with dolphin handles, on entwined dolphin feet, the walnut veneered underside inlaid in pewter with interlaced Ls terminating in dolphin heads and enclosing a fleur-de-lys and the number 'XV', minor restorations 7 1/2 in. (19 cm.) high; 18 1/2 in. (47 cm.) wide; 12 1/2 in. (32 cm.) deep
