Beschreibung:

A PAIR OF LOUIS XIV STYLE ORMOLU SEVEN-LIGHT CANDELABRAAfter model by André-Charles Boulle 19th century Each with central acanthus wrapped-nozzle above two tiers of s-scrolled branches with ram's-mask terminals, the baluster shaft with cartouche panels depicting Caesar medallions, on a concave-sided triangular plinth, hung with fruiting garlands between sphinxes, some drip pans and nozzles with bronzier stamp 'B', 67cm high, 33.5cm wide, (26in high, 13in wide) (2)FootnotesProvenance: S. Carpentier, Paris, 30 January 1991. The present candelabra relate to a design executed in four and five lights by André-Charles Boulle Ebéniste, Ciseleur, doreur et Sculpteur du Roi, 1672-1732. The design is considered to be that of Jean Bérain (1638-1711), who had trained under Charles le Brun and was appointed designer to Louis XIV in 1674. Interestingly Bérain is known to have been Boulle's neighbour in the Louvre. Several examples of this design are recorded in 18th century inventories. An 18th century pair sold from the Greenberg Collection at Sotheby's New York, on 21 May 2004, lot 14 for $400,000 and in Britain examples are preserved in the collections of Warwick Castle and Waddesdon Manor. This successful design was copied by 19th century makers. For example a pair by the August-Maximilien Delafontaine foundry in Paris, stamped 'AD', were sold Sotheby's, New York, 21 October 2020, lot 283.
