A pair of Derby ice cups in the Sevres-style painted by William Billingsley circa 1790, painted with a band of pink roses beneath a blue and gilt swag band, one with pseudo Sevres interlaced 'L's' mark, the other with puce Derby mark, long tailed iron-red 7 for Billingsley, underglaze blue 5 for the ground layer and a puce 1 for gilder Thomas Soar, 6.5cm high Cf. John Twitchett, Derby Porcelain (1980), p. 124 col. ill. 26 for an identical pair from the same service. Please note, the description for this lot in the printed catalgue is incorrect. The description should read; A Sevres porcelain ice cup (tasse a glace), circa 1770-75, painted with a band of roses beneath a blue and gilt swag band, traces of blue interlaced 'L's' mark, 6.5cm high; and a Derby ice cup in the Sevres-style painted by William Billingsley circa 1790, probably ordered as a replacement for the Sevres service, painted with a band of roses beneath a blue and gilt swag band, puce Derby mark, long tailed iron-red 7 for Billingsley, underglaze blue 5 for the ground layer and a puce 1 for gilder Thomas Soar, 6.5cm high
