A late 18th Century Continental silver pair cased verge pocket watch (made for the English market), the movement signed "Tarts London", No. 23342, the enamel dial with Roman numerals and pierced gilt hands, within enamelled borders depicting two figures by a river scene with a boat, to the verge escapement with fusee, Tompion type index with silver regulating disc with Arabic numerals, secured in pierced and engraved subsidiary plate, pierced and engraved bridge cock and with square baluster pillars, in plain inner case and contained in repousse outer case decorated with a scene of three figures attending a monarch, within S and C-scroll borders, 52mm diameter (gross weight 96 grammes), the inner case hallmarked London 1781 and with case maker's mark "W.B." (possibly William Boulton, 55 Bread Street, Cheapside) Note: Many watches for the Dutch market were marked "Tarts of London" or "Jn. Tarts", there is apparently no record of a manufacturer of that name Provenance: The John Moon Collection of Pocket Watches
