Beschreibung:

A George III brass mounted mahogany table clock George Bates, London, circa 1760 The five pillar twin fusee bell striking movement with verge escapement regulated by short bob pendulum, trip hour repeat and fine symmetrical foliate scroll and strapwork engraved backplate, the 7 inch brass break-arch dial with calendar and false bob apertures to the matted centre applied with curved silvered signature plate engraved George Bates, London within silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes to outer track, with pierced steel hands and rococo scroll cast mounts to spandrels beneath subsidiary Strike/Silent selection dial flanked by conforming mounts to arch, the bell top case with hinged brass carrying handle and four pineapple finials to the brass fillet-edged superstructure over cavetto top mouldings, the front with scroll cast upper quadrant frets and fillet inset glazed dial aperture to door flanked by cast female caryatid applied canted angles, the sides with brass-edged circular above conforming concave topped rectangular side windows, the rear matching the front, on brass-bound moulded skirt base with cast ogee bracket feet, 50cm (19.75ins) high excluding handle. George Bates does not appear to be recorded in the usual sources however several other makers with the same surname are noted. From this it is likely that George Bates was the retailer of the clock which possibly could have been supplied to him by a clockmaker related to him (i.e. with the same surname).
