A FINE QAJAR POLYCHROME LACQUER PAPIER MACHE QALAMDAN with rounded ends and sliding tray, the top and sides with a glitter ground extremely finely painted with the central figure of a Russian Orthodox priest with attendant surrounded by a group of children, scenes of carriages, horses and riders at each side, within a scrolling gold surround, signed in the centre 'Ja'far b. Najaf 'Ali', the sides with similar cartouches depicting the story of Sheikh Sanaan and the Christian maiden flanked by nasta'liq inscription cartouches with Persian verses, the black base with polychrome flowering vine around a central oval cartouche depicting a European maiden, the gold tray with polychrome flowering vine and two figural cartouches within similar borders, circa 1870 (minute damages) 9in.
