A FINE QAJAR PAPIER MACHE POLYCHROME LACQUER QALAMDAN with rounded ends and sliding tray, the top with scrolling golden leaves enclosing a central cartouche depicting the enthroned Nasir al-Din Shah Qajar surrounded by his various courtiers, ministers and sons, identified in a cartouche above, flanked by two minute inscription cartouches stating 'painted by Hayder 'Ali, the son of Agha Muhammad Isma'il', flanked by four similar cartouches depicting various enthroned rulers from the Shahnameh similarly surrounded by courtiers, the sides and base with further similar scenes together with depictions of Bahram Gur in the seven different coloured pavilions, divided by portrait ovals depicting figures from the Shahnameh, the underside also with putti holding floral swags, the tray moulded with cartouches on the exterior alternating with quatrefoils, with depictions from the lives of various dervishes alternating with portraits of dervishes, the interior of the tray with three long panels on a golden ground depicting Rustem engaged in mounted combat, Bahram Gur's master shot with the hero painted to resemble Nasir al-Din Shah, and Fitna and the cow, a portrait oval at each end, circa 1870 (very slight chipping at each end, basically good condition) 8¾in.
