New Testament], 2 parts in 1 vol., CXCVI,CXLVIII,(20); LXXIX,LXXXVIII-XCIII lvs., ident. general title-p. and title-p. to the New Testament w. woodcut borders, woodcut bird's eye map of the Holy Land, num. woodcut ills. partly by MARTIN DE KEYSER (Old Testament), modern blindst. black mor., folio. - Lacks 12 prelim. lvs. (present are the general title and a leaf w. ills. showing the six days of Creation), part (half?) of the map of the Holy Land, and of the New Testament leaf P/ p.LXXXVII and the last 10 textlvs. (P8 and Q1-8/ p.XCIII-CII); lacks the top parts of the general title and the prelim. leaf w. six ills. (these two lvs. repaired w. 20th cent. paper); quire 'a', 'b', 'c' and New Testament 'N' and 'P' bound erroneously; two lvs. of quire 'a' lacking part of upper outer corner; partly (sl.) waterstained in upper outer corner and lower margin/ corner, otherwise contents rather fine. = One of the rarest Dutch 16th cent. bibles. Poortman I, p.92ff; Darlow/ Moule 3282 note and 3285 (ed. 1542 w. the same collation as our ed.). The title-pages contain a compartment with Martin de Keyser's initials, but Poortman states that the woodcuts in the New Testament are not by De Keyser but by an anonymous artist. On verso of the leaf w. the six creation-ills. an interesting late-17th cent. annot. in pen and ink reporting, in English and in Dutch (the Dutch cut short), an earthquake occurred "the 18 of September 1692 betuixt at 2 aclock or ther by ther wes gret erth quak at Rotterdam (...) all the peepell in a great fear that the heall peepell it they thought that the heall toun [..? Dutch: "onderste bove beve zou"] (...) Robert Stal[...?]." This earthquake, with its epicentre at Verviers, Belgium was one of the severest in European history. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXXVIII.
