Large collection of publications, between 1870-±1925, Dutch, German, English and French language, mainly small and larger treatises from scientific periodicals, many (lithogr.) plates, privately bound vols./ loose issues kept together in unif. gilt hmor. bindings and portfolios (5x w. ties). - A fine set w. the following minor defects: occas. frayed/ foxed; some treatises w. "overdruk"/ orig. wr. pres.; some lvs. loose(ning). Some vols. spine trifle chafed and leather dry. = From the library of Hugo de Vries and his wife, mostly signed by his wife and occas. SIGNED by the author (w. some scattered annots. in pen and ink). Large and very rare collection of original publications by Hugo de Vries (1848-1935), the Dutch biologist, botanist and one of the first geneticists. Incl. the very rare thesis: De invloed der temperatuur op de levensverschijnselen der planten (The Hague, 1870). DSB XIV, p.95-105: "In addition to his experimental work in plant physiology, de Vries made extensive studies of the theories and literature on heredity and variation in plants. About 1890 he abruptly abandoned the study of plant physiology ans devoted himself exclusively to heredity and variation. This period in his career began with his Intercellular Pangenesis (1889), in which he reviewed critically the work of Spencer, Darwin, Nägeli, and Weismann, and proposed his own theory that "pangenes" were the carriers of hereditary traits. One of the most important books in the history of genetics, it attracted little attention at the time". SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE C.
