1983 Porsche 930 Turbo Series 1 Flachbau Conversion VIN. WP0ZZZ93ZDS000677 Engine no. 67D0686 3,299cc SOHC Turbocharged Flat Six Engine Bosch K-Jetronic Fuel Injection 300bhp at 5,500rpm 4-Speed Manual Transmission 4-Wheel Independent Suspension 4-Wheel Disc Brakes *Highly optioned example *Color-to-Sample Can Can Red leather interior *Converted to Series 1 non-popup headlight Flachbau spec *Complete with books and tools THE PORSCHE 930 TUBO A 'modern classic' if ever there was one, Porsche's long-running 911 sports car first appeared at the 1963 Frankfurt Show as the '901' but shortly after production proper commenced in 1964 had become the '911' following Peugeot's complaints about the use of '0' model numbers. The preceding Type 356's rear-engined layout was retained but the 911 switched to unitary construction for the bodyshell and dropped the 356's VW-based suspension in favor of a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. In its first incarnation, Porsche's single-overhead-camshaft, air-cooled flat six engine displaced 1,991cc and produced 130bhp; progressively enlarged and developed, it would eventually grow to more than 3.0 liters and, in turbo-charged form, put out well over 300 horsepower. Much of the Porsche 911's development had resulted from the factory's racing program and it was the then Group 4 homologation rules, which required 400 road cars to be built, which spurred the development of 'Project 930' - the legendary 911 Turbo. In production from April 1975, the Turbo married a KKK turbocharger to the 3.0-liter RSR engine, in road trim a combination that delivered 260bhp for a top speed of 155mph. But the Turbo wasn't just about top speed, it was also the best-equipped 911 and amazingly flexible - hence only four speeds in the gearbox - being capable of racing from a standstill to 100mph in 14 seconds. The Turbo's characteristic flared wheelarches and 'tea tray' rear spoiler had already been seen on the Carrera model while the interior was the most luxurious yet seen in a 911, featuring leather upholstery, air conditioning and electric windows. The Turbo's engine was enlarged to 3.3 liters for 1978, gaining an inter-cooler in the process; power increased to 300bhp and the top speed of what was the fastest-accelerating road car of its day went up to 160mph. More refined than hitherto yet retaining its high performance edge, the Turbo sold in the thousands, becoming the definitive sports car of its age. THE MOTORCAR OFFERED This unique and special 930 is a stunning example of what 'Special Wishes' meant back when Paint-to-Sample was something few folks knew about. Delivered new to Switzerland, according to a printout of factory records, this Porsche appears in its original color scheme of Guards Red over color-to-sample Can Can Red leather interior. Invoiced on the April 7, 1983, the Turbo was heavily optioned with a sport steering wheel, limited slip differential, heated power mirror, Blaupunkt Toronto stereo with CD player, air conditioning, electric sunroof, and more. Two Sonderwunsch 'Z' options were specified, one of which was the color-to-sample interior and the other of which was not recorded. The most distinctive feature of this special 911 is its exceeding rare, Series 1 non-popup headlight slantnose. Created in response from demands by customers wishing for their 930s to look like the Group 5 Porsche 935s that were dominating the track—and to combat the aftermarket companies that were already offering slantnose conversions, most sources indicate that 57 of the Sonderwunsch Flachbaus were produced from 1980 to 1983 with one more built in 1984. Early 1983 saw the introduction of popup headlights to conform with various country's standards for headlight height. It is likely that this car had its rhinoplasty done after being delivered, but by whom and when is not recorded. It should be noted that the work done is of a high standard and appears very close to factory correct—save for the holes
