This particular March-Porsche is the famous ‘Kreepy-Krauly’ car, sponsored by the South African swimming pool equipment manufacturer of that name and campaigned by PJ Racing. The team had acquired the ‘works’-supported IMSA Championship chassis as driven by Bob Holbert in the final rounds of the 1983 IMSA GTP series, and with South African Sarel van der Merwe as lead driver it contested the 1984 series in the United States. During qualifying for the year’s Daytona 24-Hours race, the car set second fastest time behind Mario Andretti in a new Porsche 962, and went on to win the long race by a margin of no fewer than nine laps, its drivers being Van der Merwe/ Tony Martin/ Geoff Duxbury. Sarel van der Merwe’s March 83G, progressively updated to 84G form, subsequently won again at Lime Rock in May, 1984, finished 3rd at Laguna Seca, 4th at Road America (co-driven by Ian Scheckter, elder brother of World Champion Jody) and at Pocono, 5th at Mid-Ohio, 6th at Riverside and in the Daytona 3-Hours, and 8th at Miami. In 1985 the ‘Kreepy-Krauly’ car numbered ‘00’ contested its second Daytona 24-Hours classic, qualifying second fastest yet again but this time being forced into retirement after 260 laps. The car was subsequently leased to the Hotchkiss/ Wynns team for the Riverside GTP round, in California, in which it finished fifth before being left unraced for the remainder of the season. The car was then upgraded, with a full Group C-specification twin-turbocharged Porsche 962 engine installed under the eyes of the Porsche factory. It saw extensive use in European Endurance Championship and German events, run by Cosmik Racing. Wearing the ‘Metaxa’ livery of its Greek brandy sponsors with lead driver Costas Los supported by – amongst others – Tiff Needell, the car achieved three top-ten finishes, 9th at both Brands Hatch and Jerez, and 10th at the Nürburgring. It also competed at Le Mans, where it was co-driven by Costas Los/ Raymond Touroul/ Neil Crang, being disqualified after 16 hours after receiving outside assistance. In its present ownership this important endurance-racing March has been comprehensively restored and prepared with the bodywork wearing original-style ‘Kreepy-Krauly’ livery. It is equipped with an updated, fully water-cooled twin-turbo flat-six Porsche 962 engine, offering a claimed 650bhp at 1.2 bar turbo boost. Rebuilt by Porsche North America at a reported cost of $53,000 this power unit has zero race hours. This attractive, endurance classic-winning car would surely be most competitive in current Historic Group C/GTP events. It is accompanied here by documentation including verification from former driver Costas Los. We are advised that all EU duties and applicable taxes have been paid.
