THE PORSCHE 930
Much of the Porsche 911's development had resulted from the factory's racing program, and it was the then FIA Group 4 homologation rules, which required 400 road cars to be built, which spurred the development of 'Project 930' - the legendary 911/930 Turbo. In production from April 1975, the Turbo married a KKK turbocharger to the 3.0-liter Carrera RSR engine, in road trim a combination that delivered 260bhp for a top speed of 155mph. But the Turbo wasn't just about top speed, it was also the best-equipped 911 and amazingly flexible - hence only four speeds in the gearbox - being capable of racing from a standstill to 100mph in 14 seconds. What set the 930 Turbo apart from its peers was the relaxed way this stupefying performance was delivered.
The Turbo's characteristic flared wheel arches and 'whale tail' rear spoiler had already been seen on the Carrera model while the interior was the most luxurious yet seen in a 911, featuring leather upholstery, air conditioning and electric windows. For 1978 the Turbo's engine was enlarged to 3.3 liters, gaining an intercooler in the process; power increased to 300bhp and the top speed of what was the fastest-accelerating road car of its day went up to 160mph. Due to strong emission regulation in the US, the Turbo was not imported for the US market between 1979 and 1984, but returned in 1985, now equipped with upgraded Motronic engine management systems. Targa and Cabriolet versions were also introduced. More refined than hitherto yet retaining its high-performance edge, the Porsche 930 Turbo sold in the thousands, arguably becoming the definitive sports car of its age.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
Offered here is a beautiful example of the desirable, original 3.0-Liter 930 Turbo Carrera. The 192nd example built in the 1977 production year, this stunning 930 was completed at the Zuffenhausen Porsche factory in early fall of 1976. According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity accompanying the car, it was delivered just as it appears today in Minerva (Caribe) Blue (W9). Inside, the 930 Turbo Carrera was trimmed in black leather and fully equipped with top-of-the-line features including limited slip differential, Blaupunkt Bamberg radio with cassette, chrome parts finished in matte black, matching black headliner, and air condition. Delivered new in Germany on November 18, 1976 to Willy Freter of the Hamburg area, the first owner is recorded in the original owner's manual along with service stamps from his early ownership.
The second owner was Wilken Eckehard, also from the Hamburg area. Eckehard retained the car through the early 1980s, with service stamps in his copy of the owner's manual going through 1983 with 62,000km recorded. In 1984 the Porsche came stateside where it was registered by its third owner, Donald Frey of Malden, Massachusetts, on November 15, 1984. Retained for two years, Frey sold the car on August 22, 1986 to Brenda Loring of Brockton, Massachusetts. An enthusiastic owner, Loring would enjoy the car for 19 years to the day before selling it to her brother, David Bosworth of Annville, Pennsylvania, on August 22, 2005. During Bosworth's ownership, the Porsche was extensively serviced and restored by Monteith Restoration & Performance of Lebanon, Pennsylvania with receipts of file documenting the car's repaint in its original color, an engine and transmission rebuild, an update of the turbo to a more dependable K27, an update of the air conditioner to a Keuhl rotary compressor (both the original turbo and A/C compressor accompany the vehicle), and much more.
Acquired by the current owner, a long time Porsche Club of America member and passionate collector, in 2012, the 930 has been regularly serviced and maintained. Since joining his collection, the swift coupe has received over $36,000 in maintenance, including a major overhaul to the brake and fuel lines, the CDI box, new shocks and tires, and more completed in 2020. Today, this era-evoking 930 3.0 Turbo Carrera presents extremely well throughout.
Accompanied by three sets of owner's manuals (two in German from the first pair of owners and one in English), an original Porsche 911 brochure, a copy of the January 1977 issue of Road & Track that featured an identically colored 930 in their road test comparison against a Group 4 and Group 5 930, as well as copies of the previous titles in Messers. Frey and Bosworth's names and reams of receipts from the mid-2000s to the present, there is a lot to love about the raw, pre-intercooler turbo.
This desirable, first generation 930 3.0 Turbo Carrera could be shown at concours events or exercised on high-speed rallies such as the Ramshorn Rally, and retains its original, matching numbers engine. Combining the unmistakable looks of a classic Porsche, the powerful Turbo motor, and the collectability that goes hand in hand with its low production figures and iconic status, this extraordinary 'Youngtimer' collector's car will not disappoint.
