Celebrating Porsche's famous victory in the Carrera Panamericana road race of the early 1950s, the 'Carrera' name was used on the four-cam 356 models of the 1950s and subsequently revived for the legendary 911 RS 2.7 homologation special in 1973. Thereafter Porsche reserved the Carrera badge for the quickest production 911 in the range. Production of the 1973 Carrera RS was strictly limited, with 500 units required to qualify the model for Group 4 GT events, and it is now widely regarded as perhaps the best all round 911 of all, hugely desirable but fiendishly expensive. When Porsche revamped the entire 911 line-up for 1974 with the G-series bodyshell various improvements were made, including impact-absorbing bumpers, deeper sills and the deletion of exterior chrome work. Mechanically identical to the RS 2.7, the 1974 Carrera was the last 911 to use the Bosch mechanical fuel injection system and retained the forged pistons, with 210bhp developed from the 2,687cc flat six. Other changes included uprated rear suspension, anti-roll bars front and rear plus alloy brake calipers, although the Fuchs 15-inch rims were retained. Inside there were new high-backed leather seats, electric windows and a new leather three-spoke steering wheel. Thanks to a slight increase in weight, the Carrera's performance was marginally slower than the RS but could still manage 0-60mph in a very quick time of 6.3 seconds. With a mere 1,543 Carrera 2.7 Coupes and 610 Targas completed in the 1974-1975 period, the model is now seriously sought after in its own right. The 1974 Carrera on offer here was imported into Australia from the UK in 1977 and previously belonged to former America's Cup skipper and Porsche enthusiast Iain Murray, then Geoff Banks of Morgan & Banks. In the present ownership since 2000, the car was recently resprayed in the original Porsche Metallic Steel Blue colour, has black leather upholstery and is fitted with a whale tail. All maintenance has been carried out by Porsche specialists Ian Hamilton and Grant Geehlan of Autohaus Hamilton and according to them various upgrades have been late model cam followers, suspension improvements and 16 x 8 Fuchs wheels (front ) with 16 x 10 wheels at the rear. The owner has spent in excess of $30,000 on the car, with recent work completed including a new clutch, fuel lines, two new drive shafts and new soundproofing material. Complete with an Alpine stereo system, books, full service history and tool kit, the Porsche is to be sold registered in NSW until September 2011.
