It is every red-blooded male's dream to stumble across the car of his dreams in a barn. And it happened to me last month when I was photographing something else and espied this Aston Martin behind a large door. After a little investigation and a chat with the owner of the land, it transpired that not only was this a DBS with a manual gearbox coupled to a V8 engine but that it was for sale. Possibly. A few calls later followed by a meeting and the result is here for you. Intended as the successor to the DB6, this model was powered by a straight six engine before it was phased out in favour of the Vantage. It was a larger coupé than the DB6 with four full sized seats but was powered by the same four litre engine as the previous car. It was also intended to have a more 'modern' look rather than that of the previous series of Aston models and it incorporated a fastback style rear end and squared off front grill, very much then 'in vogue' in automotive design circles of the late sixties. Trademark Aston design features such as a bonnet scoop, knock off wire wheels and side air vents with stainless steel brightwork were, however, retained. Indeed, the last car to be built under David Brown's control, it was finally made available with a 5340cc, V8 engine in 1969 and became known as the DBS V8. At the time, it was the fastest four- seater production car in the world with the new model fitted with light alloy wheels and ventilated brake discs. As expected, it was the car of choice for MI-6 used, as it was, in the 1969 James Bond film, 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' starring the actually excellent, George Lazenby with another also appearing in the next Bond film, 'Diamonds are Forever' with Sean Connery. Roger Moore's character, Lord Brett Sinclair, also uses a 'Bahama Yellow' DBS in the TV series, 'The Persuaders'. Little is known of the former years of this particular car, suffice to say that it was privately purchased by the vendor in 1982 from a Mr. Clews of Leamington Spa and used regularly. It was a bronze colour at this time but during this period of activity, it was re-painted to the tune of £10,000, back to its correct factory colour of dark red. In 1995 the car is parked up and left. The condition is largely good however. The paintwork is now flat with some green staining and the sills do not appear corroded. The brightwork has surface rust but the panels throughout would appear sound. Mice and moths have found their way into the interior and the rear seats and carpets have provided fine dining for some time. The front seats look good though and the dash, instruments and steering wheel are all intact. With some elbow grease and leather food, a huge difference could be affected. The engine is certainly dusty but the oil from the dipstick is clear, the fan rotates and the car moves freely on its wheels. Supplied with UK registration document and two old MoT test certificates, this is an exciting opportunity to bring a DBS with the original and highly desirable fuel injected V8 engine back to life. Prices for these have skyrocketed in recent years and, offered at no reserve, this represents a very special opportunity.
