Left hand drive. In the late 1950s Mercedes-Benz found itself with a fine line-up of modern, powerful engines, but a somewhat dated range of bodystyles. This shortcoming was answered by the introduction of the new 220 series at the 1959 Frankfurt Show. The second generation 220 had completely new and elegant bodywork, longer, wider and lower than before. Flanking the traditional Mercedes grille were distinctive, vertically stacked headlights contoured into wings that swept back to an angular tail. Combined with this attractive styling, the 220 SE convertible was the first production Mercedes-Benz four seater to have the benefits of a fuel injected engine, producing 130bhp, along with revised suspension and front disc brakes. The body design was so advanced and stylish that it remained largely unchanged until 1972. This highly successful Mercedes-Benz line continues to provide collectors with classic open air motoring. With a huge club following and Mercedes-Benz factory parts back-up, these cars will continue to provide pride of ownership to their respective owners well into the next century. In addition to receiving a correct restoration to original factory specifications by its previous owner, a well known collector from Pennsylvania, this car has been fitted with European style headlights, a popular conversion to improve the 220SEb's aesthetic overall 'look'. The car has a large service history from 1976 until the present (the mileage seems to be a genuine 73,709 from new). The car is resplendent in black with a contrasting red leather upholstery and fine woodwork. Features of this model include power steering, power brakes and dealer-installed Kahlmeister air conditioning. A new stainless steel exhaust sytem is fitted and the car comes with its tools. This Mercedes-Benz has just been fully serviced and detailed by Ridgewood Motor Classics of New Jersey and should be ready for full enjoyment this summer.
