Introduced at the New York Motor Show of 1959 the Daimler Dart was a V8 powered sports car with controversial styling. The Dart name was soon dropped after the threat of legal action from Chrysler who had a car of that name within their Dodge division; thereafter this new sports car was known as the SP250. Power was provided by the 2.5 litre Edward Turner designed V8 that soon became revered for the smoothness in its power delivery with 140bhp on tap. Independent double wishbone front suspension at the front and half elliptical springs at the rear with a live rear axle kept the car on the road with stopping power supplied by hydraulic disc brakes on all four corners. The coachwork was constructed with glass reinforced plastic providing a tough, strong and lightweight shape that enhanced performance with exciting and non traditional looks. The coachwork was built around a traditional cruciform-braced ladder-frame chassis (similar to the Triumph TR3 chassis) - the initial 'A' specification version lacked torsional rigidity and so by 1960, under the now Jaguar ownership, the B specification SP250s featured a much stiffer frame equipped with additional outriggers and a strengthening hoop between the B posts. Out of the 2,500 SP250s manufactured, 1,453 were right hand drive. The 120mph plus capability was recognised by the police and they were soon being used as a high speed chase cars. On offer today is a truly stunning and award winning 'B' specification right hand drive example of Daimler's rare and individual sports car and is only one of the 26 cars that the Metropolitan police used to chase speeding motorists around London's North and South Circular roads. For thirteen seasons previous to this year, 670 ELL has been used as a course car at the world famous Goodwood Revival meeting. You may have seen it being driven by one of the Clerks of the Course around the circuit before and after each race or leading one of the featured parade laps. The car has gained the reputation of being the best and most reliable car the officials use there. It has also been featured in several magazines. With its present owner for 32 years, it has been subject to a constant programme of restoration, improvement and maintenance. It comes with a massive history file with invoices for various works from Daimler specialists that include amongst many; a re-trim and engine rebuild. Unlike a lot of SP's it remains in remarkably original condition but has been discreetly improved with a brake servo, anti-tramp bars and telescopic rear shock absorbers (the original lever arm units are included should the new owner wish to revert to the original set-up). Police details that remain on the car are an operational Winkworth bell, correct style driving light, non working radio, microphone, aerial, passenger footrest and radio interference suppression kit on the engine. All the Metropolitan Police cars were fitted with the desirable automatic gearbox with a cable operated device that holds in the intermediate gear for crisper performance while chasing criminals around town! The tan/hazel leather interior invites the lucky owner to settle into the office; drive is smooth and easy with the power coming into its own when warmed up. The original Police odometer instrument is also included in the sale but is not currently fitted. The car's Police record has been traced from its purchase date and sale by the Met, although we don't know how many criminals it apprehended. We do however have the delightful picture showing the car on parade, with the Met. The overall condition is superb, with excellent body and paintwork, beautiful and detailed concourse engine bay, fabulous interior which is just starting to mellow since the last re-trim and very strong mechanics.
