Beschreibung:

The 2-wheel manufacturing side of BMW was faced with enormous difficulties in the aftermath of WWII, and were unable to produce motorcycles until December 1948. The first model to appear was a single cylinder 250, the R24, an updated version of the pre-war R23. In excess of 9,000 were produced over the first twelve months, a magnificent effort, which of itself created a demand upon the company to reintroduce their horizontally opposed twin cylinder models, physically different machines but which had always enjoyed a fine reputation. Supplies of the twin cylinder 500cc R51/2 began in 1950, a model which – given the industrial circumstances – was quite heavily based on the R51, last made in 1940. But, with diligent progress allied to a program of constant updates, BMW brought out the greatly improved R51/3 in 1954, followed by the all-new R50 series one year later. There were several significant changes between the R50, and earlier R51. Telescopic forks were changed to Earles type leading link suspension, and the formerly rear sited plungers were replaced by a swinging arm. The numerous engine modifications already incorporated into the R51/3 were further enhanced with an improved gearbox and differential; the new R50 series ensured that BMW’s Boxer philosophy could now match, and arguably exceed, anything emanating – and in much greater volume – from the British factories. While the R50 and the larger 600cc R60 version were visibly slower than [and could be out-cornered by] British vertical twins, the sheer quality of the Bee Emm’s components set a whole new standard, utterly unmatched by any other producer. This iconic 57,000-mile R50 is offered in original condition. Without reserve
