Four years earlier in Paris, one of his Ink Lotus compositions sold for $60,000, at the time the highest price ever paid for a contemporary Chinese artist, drawing international headlines. Residing primarily in Brazil at the time, he was returning to California, with plans for a major exhibition of his work at the Stanford Museum at Stanford University opening on July 22. And on August 29th, the Laky Gallery in Carmel, California, would open the artist's first of several selling exhibitions of his paintings billing him as "the foremost Chinese painter of Modern Times". During his April sojourn to San Francisco, the artist and his impressive entourage would visit the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, and see old friends and artist acquaintances. It was at this time that the artist created Landscape for Lin Qingni. Lin Qingni (Lim Tsing-Ai, 1914-1974) was a Guangzhou native who settled in San Francisco and opened the Chinese Art Gallery in San Francisco's Chinatown in 1965.
