Unsigned Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) A pleasingly worn and tactile ivory carving of ideal netsuke shape. Kadori Myojin is shown taming the namazu (earthquake fish) with a large hyotan (double gourd). The ivory bearing a fine yellowish patina. Himotoshi between the two and underneath the namazu. LENGTH 4.5 cm Condition: Very good condition with associated wear and natural age cracks. Provenance: Ex-collection W. W. Winkworth, then ex-collection Carlo Monzino, sold at Sotheby’s, 21 June 1995, London, lot 251. Purchased by Teddy Hahn, Darmstadt, from the above.
