Beschreibung:

(x) 1968 undenominated master die proofs of the Queen's Head with "australia" at top in crimson-lake, orange-vermilion and in deep green, each inset on thick non-contemporary card (95x100mm.), fine. The only recorded examples in private hands. Photo Note: The 1966 Queen's Head definitives utilised the Anthony Buckley portrait of the Queen which had first been used for the 5d. definitive of 1963. It was intended that this be replaced as soon as practical after 1966, and in 1968 the Post Office obtained permission to use a new profile photograph of the Queen which had been taken by John Hedgecoe and which eventually became the British Machin design. Designs were prepared at the Note Printing Branch and one was recommended for adoption in July 1968, and approved by the Queen in November. An undenominated steel die was engraved and proofs submitted to the Post Office in various colours. Work on the new stamps then ceased, apparently as a result of Note Printing Branch information that the new Rembrandt photogravure machine would be ready for use in the near future, and would allow full-colour Queen's Head definitives to be printed in large quantities. In fact, the Rembrandt press did not come on-line until 1973, but no further work of the Hedgecoe design was undertaken.
