Wiss [by William Godwin]. London: Printed for M.J. Godwin and Co., At the Juvenile Library 1814 and 1816. 2 vols., small 8vo, uniform contemporary tree calf, each spine with 7 horizontal gilt rules, spine of vol. 1 with faint blindstamping of title, etc., spine of vol. 2 with gilt volume number, C7 in vol. 2 with thumb-size chip and loss of a few words, small tears in 2 flyleaves repaired, dark blue morocco folding case . Second Edition in English of vol. 1 (the first part of The Family Robinson Crusoe ), FIRST EDITION in English of Vol. 2 (the continuation), engraved frontispiece and 5 plates after H. Corbauld ( some light foxing ), engraved folding map, leaf at end of vol. 1 regarding the continuation. The first part of The Family Robinson Crusoe was originally published in Zurich in 1812; it was first issued in English in a two-volume format by Mary J. Godwin, also in 1814. The continuation in German was published in 1813, but not translated into English until 1816. See Herman W. Luebert, Yale University Library Gazette (XXXII,1: July 1947), and Justin G. Schiller, Ltd., Catalogue 41: Realms of Childhood (1983), item 112, regarding the first edition in English (Schiller noting: "The one-volume reprint is this wrongly described as the first English edition by Osborne 318, Morgan Library/ Children's 140, and Sotheby/ Oppenheimer 2724")...the best known of all Robinsonnades" -- Morgan Library Children's 140. A very good copy; rare. Provenance : "Johanna Vanden Broele" on front flyleaf of each vol. (2)
