WWI Medals. A Great War "Battle of Beersheba" casualty group group of three to Lieutenant William Armine Edwards, Glamorgan Yeomanry, died of wounds 31 October 1917 British War and Victory Medals (2. Lieut. W.A. Edwards), Territorial Force War Medal, G.V.R. (2. Lieut. W.A. Edwards. Glam.Yeo.), extremely fine, mounted for display, with a copied photograph of the recipient and related paperwork together with a Great War pair to Corporal S.H. Hoare, Army Service Corps, British War and Victory Medals (S4-215881 Cpl. S.H. Hoare. A.S.C.), extremely fine with card box of issue (Qty: 5) Lieutenant William Armine Edwards (1892-1917), was born in Swansea and educated at Harrow School where he played for XV against Eton in 1909. He then went up to Trinity Hall Cambridge and played cricket for Glamorgan. He served with the Glamorgan Yeomanry prior to the outbreak of WWI but was subsequently commissioned Second Lieutenant on 20 December 1915. The regiment left for Egypt in December 1915 and were involved in a campaign against the Senussi. In 1917 the dismounted elements of the Pembrokeshire Yeomanry and Glamorgan Yeomanry formed the 24th Battalion, The Welch Regiment (TF) as part of the 231st Infantry Brigade of the 74th (Broken Spur) Division. The Battalion joined the offensive on Gaza and Beersheba as part of the campaign to drive the Turks out of Egypt and Palestine. Their first action came on 31 October 1917 when the 24th Welch and the 25th RWF gallantly stormed strong Turkish trenches, carried them out and advanced nearly two miles into enemy territory. Lieutenant Edwards was however, mortally wounded while leading his platoon in the attack and died the following day. Edwards is buried at Beersheba Military Cemetery, Ottoman Syria
