"Flamboyant, opinionated, egocentric - a proper genius. The dominant figure in American architecture in the first half of the twentieth century, he was a modernist who shunned the international flavor of Le Corbusier and Gropius in favor of a more organic expression, as in his private houses with horizontal lines that linked them to their sites"--W.M.
