Beschreibung:

An extensive archive of Major General William Henry Harrison, Jr. (1892-1956). General Harrison was related to the ninth President of the United States, William Henry Harrison (1773-1841). Virtually nothing is published regarding General Harrison's service in World War Two. Still, Harrison, of Roxbury, Massachusetts, had a long military career, serving in the Navy during the first World War, and serving as a colonel in the quartermaster corps in the European Theater during the second World War. He was in charge of cargo dispatching in the invasion of the Continent, and ran up a record, which brought him citations for efficiency. At the Massachusetts State House, Harrison was a military aide for Governor Joseph B. Ely and was on the military staff of Governor Charles F. Hurley. He was made captain by Governor Hurley in early 1937, and made a major later in the year. In 1946, Harrison was appointed Massachusetts Adjutant General. At this same time, he was heavily involved in the re-establishment of the National Guard in Massachusetts. Album containing passport, 30+ letters and documents regarding the 10th Anniversary of the Normandy D-Day Observance of the National Guard Association in 1954, attended by Harrison, who commanded the advance group at Normandy, which prepared for the opening of Antwerp, under fire, to Allied shipping. Events were held in both London and Paris, and the album also includes 20+ booklets, menus, tickets, and other ephemera, plus over 20 photographs from Harrison’s trip overseas. Album containing 100+ photographs, most 8 x 10 in., newspaper clippings, and letters regarding a parade of the Massachusetts National Guard in Boston in 1956, led by Harrison and his staff. Album highlighting events from Harrison’s military career, including 75+ photographs, most 8 x 10 in., plus 60+ newspaper clippings, documents, and other ephemera. Assorted books and booklets, including the titles: The Law of Destiny, A Novel of Two Brothers, by Ralph Wm. Wiles, Major, U.S. Army, with note enclosed to Harrison, written and signed by the author; The 13th Port, 1943-1946; The Story of Antwerp X; Antwerp in Photos; 5th Major Port / Transportation Corps U.S. Army / A story of Three Years Overseas, 1942-1945; Photos from the Fifth Annual Reunion of the Normandy Commission of the National Guard Association, 1958; and The Army Personal Affairs Handbook. Franklin D. Roosevelt Inauguration Invitation and Program, January 20, 1937. John F. Kennedy Birthday Dinner Booklet and pamphlet, May 29, 1961. Also included: 60+ letters to Harrison from various political and military figures, including: Lauris Norstad; Edmund Muskie; Victor Anderson; Robert Meyner; Joseph Johnson; J. Caleb Boggs; Lt. Gen. Herbert Powell; Maj. Gen. J.W. Bowen; Lt. Gen. Clark L. Ruffner; Lt. Gen. William F. Hall; Maj. Gen. Sory Smith; Maj. Gen. Robert E.L. Eaton; Maj. Gen. R.L. Esmay; Frank S. Farley; Col. Joel D. Volpe; Christian Herter; Chester Furbish; Foster Furcolo; Otis Whitney; Marshall Potter; John E. Powers; Thomas P.
