WORLD - BECHLER, GUSTAVUS R.
WORLD - BECHLER, GUSTAVUS R. New Illustrated and Historical Copper Plate Map of the World on Mercator's Projection. Philadelphia: C.Kellogg Stone and Cowles & Titus, 1861. Hand-coloured engraved wall map of the World, on two sheets joined, 1270 x 1524 mm, backed on linen, on rollers (Some wear and creasing to map.) A rare and highly decorative map of the World, and one of the largest maps made in America during the nineteenth-century. With great use of colour and extensive detail, it depicts the globe during a period of considerable change. The American west is still largely unsettled, the transcontinental railroad still under construction, and Alaska is shown as a Russian possession. While European powers have largely extended their hegemony over Asia, the map features Africa, in the period just before the "Scramble for Africa". The map contains a number of interesting inset maps and tables, including one depicting the ocean and wind currents as identified by Humboldt, and a bihemispherical view of the world.
