WORDSWORTH, WILLIAM and SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE]. Lyrical Ballads, with a Few Other Poems. London: Printed for J. & A. Arch 1798. Small 8vo, dark green morocco, richly gilt, g.e., by Riviere, an inch crack at head of front outer joint, top inner blank corner of title-leaf skilfully renewed, without terminal leaf advertisements. FIRST EDITION, second issue with the London imprint, errata leaf at end. Rothschild 2604; Healey 4; Grolier English 66; Hayward 202 (first issue, see note). A landmark of English poetry; the majority of the poems are by Wordsworth, but among Coleridge's contributions is the earliest version of "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." Joseph Cottle, the original Bristol publisher of Lyrical Ballads , had five hundred copies printed, but almost immediately disposed of his stock to the London publisher Arch, who had a new title-page prepared. Some thirteen copies of the Bristol first issue are known.
