WOLPE, Stefan (1902-1972). Autograph music manuscript signed ('Wolpe') of the song 'Smolo tachat roshi', a setting for voice and piano from the Song of Songs, [Jerusalem, 1936], dedicated, in German, to 'sweet Jewish and Arab girls' ('süssen Juden und Arabermädchen gewidmet'), a few erasures and revisions, extensively annotated, apparently for performance, in lead pencil and red crayon (chiefly fingerings, slurs and dynamics), 16 pages, 4to (342 x 246mm) (thumb-soiling at lower corners), paper wrappers (somewhat worn and soiled).

Wolpe taught theory and composition at the Jerusalem Conservatory from 1934 until 1938: the discovery and exploration of his Jewish heritage had a profound impact, and a number of settings of Hebrew biblical texts as well as of Hebrew and Yiddish poets and folksongs date from this period. The present song is one of two settings from the Song of Songs which were first performed in Jerusalem (to a somewhat mixed reception) in 1936.
