Beschreibung:

with a detailed pen-portrait of a man’s face, in Latin on parchment [Germany (perhaps Bohemia), fifteenth century] Cutting from the centre of a leaf, with one large calligraphic initial ‘A’ (opening “Ascendit moyses in montem …”, a versicle for the second Nocturn for the 4th Sunday in Quadragesima) edged in penwork foliage and enclosing a portrait of a middle-aged clean-shaven man’s face staring wistfully to the right, with an upturned lip which echoes his protruding nose and meets it at its tip, the man wearing a coif and with a striped and dotted hat, rubrics in red (somewhat oxidised), 7 lines of angular late gothic bookhand with music on a 4-line red stave, recovered from a binding and hence somewhat discoloured, with sixteenth-century inscriptions “Johannes Franciscus Son” and “van Vessel”, reverse darkened and stained, overall in fair and presentable condition, 365 by 190mm.
