WIT, FREDERICK DE. Atlas. Amsterdam, circa 1680]. (Inserted title:) VISSCHER, NICOLAES. Atlas minor sive geographia compendiosa, qua orbis terrarum per paucas attamen novissimas tabulas ostenditur. Amsterdam: Visscher, n.d. Engraved hand-colored alegorical title, printed title (both from a Visscher atlas) and 104 (in 106) engraved double-page maps (numbered 1-104 according to the index) in CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLORING (including 2 folding maps and 2 maps extended on 2 double-page sheets), and hand-colored printed index (for the de Wit Atlas) at end. Folio 530 x 327 mm. (20.7/8 x 13 in.), contemporary vellum, ties replaced with modern cloth; the green in some of the maps slightly chipping and splitting, mostly in the margins of the longitude and latitude grid, some with clear tape repairs on verso, strips of tape in a few other areas, to even out light wrinkling. Engraved title and printed title from a Visscher atlas, This copy is evidently a de Wit atlas, with all the maps mentioned in the de Wit index present and in the same order, but with the engraved title, the printed title and the first 7 maps from a Visscher atlas (including Orbis Terrarum [Shirley 406], Americae [Tooley p. 119, no. 29], Africae, Asiae, Europa and Hispania). The cartographers for this atlas include: De Wit (55 maps), Visscher (27), Allard (6), Janssonius (6) and others (10). De Wit's atlas was first issued in the 1670s with 17 maps, and throughout the 1680s the atlas was expanded as new maps were produced, and 1707 the atlas had grown to 170 maps. Some of de Wit's maps adopt a grid system of graticules, in the same way as Nicloaes Visscher. The de Wit maps finely colored. Koeman III, 10.
