(8 3/4 x 5 5/8 in.), contemporary green half morocco, t.e.g., others uncut, joints and extremities rubbed, upper inner hinges tender, a few sheets in vol. 2 partly unopened, half-inch marginal tear to plate 7 of Bonaparte's Continuation in vol. 3, plates offset to text . William Jardine's combined edition of Wilson's America Ornithology with vols. 1 to 3 of Bonaparte's supplement (vol. 4 was still unpublished); engraved frontispiece portrait of Wilson by Lizars after J. W. Gordon on mounted china paper, 97 hand-colored engraved plates by William H. Lizars, 76 after Wilson, the remainder after T. R. Peale, A. Rider, and J. J. Audubon (plate 4 of Bonaparte's "Continuation" in vol. 3). The backgrounds of the plates in this copy are colored. Ayer/Zimmer pp. 683-4; Copenhagen/Anker 534; Fine Bird Books 114; McGill/Wood 630; Nissen IVB 996. Provenance : Edward Ingersoll Browne, bookplate Dr. Evan Morton Evans (1870-1955); loosely inserted is a postcard to Evans from the bookseller Frank Walters, dated 14 June 1937, concerning the existence of two issues of the plates (with the backgrounds colored and uncolored) Daniel Webster Evans (1907-1966) (3)
