ROGER WILLIAMS WRITES FROM THE NEW SETTLEMENT TO WINTHROP REGARDING HOSTAGES HELD BY THE CONNECTICUT INDIANS Sr, About (from Portsmouth) I received Yours: As I lately advertised to Mr Gov[erno]r ye Hurries of ye Natives thoughts & consultations so Continue, about ye 3 Nayantaquits prisoners with 5 friends at Qunniticut; yt your Runnawayes are Longer secure in their Escape then otherwise they should be. The Monhiggin [Mohican] Sachim Onkas refuseth to part with his prey: And whereas Miantunnomu was going up to Monhiggin himselfe with a Sufficient Company for three Runnawayes! Onkas sent word yt it was yr Wo[rshi]ps plot to bring him into ye Snare at Monhiggin yt there ye Qunniticut English might fall upon him. "Miantunnomu still promiseth me to Come over to you, & his purpose (to his utmost) to bring them with him: my occasions lead me within these 4 or 5 dayes to Qunnipiug when (ye Lord so permitting): I purpose to go up to Monhiggin & try ye utmost my Selfe: The yssue of all is in yt Everlasting Hand, in wch is o[u]r Breath & o[u]r Wayes, in whome I desire to be still Yo[u]r Wo[rshi]ps [un]faigned Roger Williams " In a postscript, he adds: "I thank yr Wo[rshi]p for the Scotch Intelligence: the Issue (I feare) will be generall & grievous persecution of all Saincts. Mine & my poore wives best Salutes to Mrs. Winthrop & all yrs. A VERY RARE AMERICAN AUTOGRAPH. Since 1916, only four autograph letters of Roger Williams (including the present) have appeared at auction. The present letter is the only one to be offered at auction since 1940: in the first Sang sale in 1978, in the sale of Americana from the Middendorf collection in 1989, and again now. We know of no other Williams letters in private hands. In the extreme lower margin is the later inscription: "[Printed in VI vol. 4th Series of the Mass. Historical Socy's collections: given to Miss Jessie Duncan by Robt. C. Winthrop.]" Provenance : 1. The recipient, Gov. John Winthrop (1587-1649), First Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. 2. Robert C. Winthrop (1809-1894), descendant of the above and from 1839 to his death President of the Massachusetts Historical Society. 3. Miss Jessie Duncan, gift of the above, as recorded in a mid-nineteenth century inscription. 4. Foster Stearns of Hancock, New Hampshire (sale, Charles F. Heartman, 22 February 1932, lot 564, $4,000). 5. Philip D. Sang (sale, Sotheby Parke-Bernet, 26 April 1978, lot 316). 6. The Hon. J. William Middendorf II (sale, Christie's New York, 17 May 1989, lot 325).
